There's been a lot of discussion about possible radon from granite and other natural stone products. In some instances certain granite slabs contained radium, a known cause of cancer in humans.
If the levels of Radon in your house are a concern for you there are a few things you can do to give yourself some peace of mind:
1. Purchase a granite counter top testing kit
2. Test your home (most kits come with a activate charcoal sample which is used to measure the radon present in the air)
3. Re-test
4. Based upon your resluts you can take the steps found here:
Quartz is a manmade or engineered product that is mostly Quartz with a little bit of resin. It has all of the properties of Granite and other natural stones plus it has the advantage of being 100% radium-free and ultimately requires less maintenance.
Granite, like most other natural stones requires regular sealing and is possible to stain the lighter colors by accident. The resins in Silestone give it a built in sealer on the surface. Also its colors are more consistent from sheet to sheet.
